Digital darlings Kim Schulze and Roxy Burger have their finger on the pulse and thumbs on the buttons as they manage 5FM social media accounts. “Our digital audience is actually bigger than our listenership. Just like radio is a crucial part of our daily lives, so is digital,” says Kim. The three platforms used across the board include Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. “Although numbers are important, engagement levels, rather than the number of followers should be prioritised.”
With over 334000 Facebook followers, over 69000 on Instagram and over one million followers on Twitter, the 5FM social media team are definitely doing something right. Some reasons for the strength of 5FM’s online presence? “The timing of online posts has always reflected the on-air timing, with social media posts linked to the show currently on air. The fact that each show has its own Twitter account also assists as it prevents the core 5FM timeline from getting too crowded” explains Kim.
“The greatest issue with social media nowadays is the algorithms in place. It has become more and more difficult for your content to be seen by the right people. This is why 5FM works so hard to generate organic interaction and is what has helped us achieve our cult following both on air and online.”
